The green mountains remain silent, while the memorial stands forever. On the morning of March 29, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Zhixing Academy organized faculty and students to visit the Shantou Revolutionary Martyrs 'Cemetery to conduct a Qingming Festival memorial activity and the "First Ideological and Political Education Class" for the 2026 spring semester. Attendees included Professor Fang Yiwen, Secretary of the School's Party Committee; Professor Duan Lianfeng, Head of the Department; Associate Professor Lei Zhongwei; student counselors Lai Yuwen and Miao Qimei; as well as representatives of Party members and Youth League members from Huaying Natural Gas Co., Ltd. The event was chaired by Li Xiaoyan, Deputy Secretary of the School's Party Committee.
In the early morning, the martyrs' cemetery was adorned with lush pines and cypresses, exuding a sense of solemnity and reverence. The ceremony commenced to the resonant strains of the national anthem; all faculty and students stood in solemn silence, paying their respects before the monument to revolutionary martyrs. The stirring melody echoed across the cemetery grounds, conveying an unwavering love for the motherland and profound remembrance for the fallen heroes.
Flowers were offered to express mourning, and a moment of silence was observed to honor the legacy of the martyrs. Representatives of teachers and students stepped forward slowly to present flower baskets and chrysanthemums at the Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument. All faculty and students bowed their heads and observed a three-minute silence, extending their highest respect to the revolutionary martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives for national independence, the liberation of the people, and the prosperity of the nation.
Before the solemn and dignified monument, Professor Fang Yiwen delivered a speech themed "Carrying Forward the Spirit of the Martyrs: Bravely Shouldering the Mission of Our Era." He paid heartfelt tribute to the revolutionary martyrs and, in light of the inaugural year of the 15th Five-Year Plan, called upon all faculty and students of the college to internalize the spirit of the martyrs in their hearts and manifest it through their actions. He emphasized four key dimensions: strengthening their convictions, bravely undertaking the mission of scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement, keeping firmly in mind General Secretary Xi Jinping's earnest instructions for Guangdong, and fostering a profound sense of patriotism and devotion to the nation. Professor Fang urged them to align closely with national strategic needs, focus on critical sectors such as new materials and green chemical industries, conduct their research on the soil of the motherland, integrate their youthful efforts into the practice of high-quality development, and thereby deliver outstanding achievements in the chemical industry that live up to the expectations of our era in the grand journey toward building a strong nation and achieving national rejuvenation.
Following the ideological and political education class, teachers and students participated in a volunteer service activity themed "Polishing the Memorial Stones: Labor is Glorious." Equipped with tools, they meticulously cleaned the tombstones of martyrs, swept fallen leaves from the martyrs' cemetery, and removed weeds from the surrounding areas—taking concrete actions to safeguard the sacred resting places of the martyrs. Each act of bending or reaching up reflected a profound remembrance of the fallen heroes; each stroke of the cloth symbolized the continued inheritance of the "red gene."
This Qingming Festival memorial activity, alongside the "First Ideological and Political Education Class," extended red education from the classroom to martyrs' cemeteries, organically integrating a small ideological and political education classroom with a broader societal learning environment. This initiative enabled teachers and students to reflect on their original aspirations while honoring the martyrs, and to forge their character through practical labor. Participants expressed their determination to take the spirit of the martyrs as their guiding beacon, steadfast faith as their cornerstone, and their youthful endeavors as part of the momentum of the "15th Five-Year Plan" era, thereby contributing the wisdom and strength of chemical industry professionals to the great cause of building a strong nation and achieving national rejuvenation.
