Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Frontiers of Mathematics and Big Model Computing for Higher Education Institutions

2026-10-09

Established in 2024, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Frontiers of Mathematics and Big Model Computing for Higher Education Institutions is a joint initiative of Shantou University and the Shantou Branch of China Telecom Corporation Limited, led by Professor Fei Xu. Building on the longstanding research foundations of Shantou University’s Institute of Mathematics, the laboratory brings together academic leaders including Professors Hasi Wulan, Zhifeng Hao, Furong Lin, Dazhi Jiang, and Hao Cai. It draws on expertise in mathematics, computer science, and related disciplines to develop a research platform integrating fundamental research, technological innovation, talent development, and technology transfer.

The laboratory focuses on four research areas: frontier mathematics, data modeling and analysis, large model algorithms and applications, and computing platforms for large models. Its fundamental mathematical research covers algebra and category theory, complex analysis and operator theory, topological dynamical systems, and geometric analysis. In data modeling and analysis, it combines mathematical modeling, scientific computing, and operations research to develop methods for analyzing complex data and addressing practical problems. Its research on large model algorithms and applications emphasizes multimodal information processing, intelligent human–computer interaction, and human–machine cognitive integration. Research on computing platforms addresses computing architectures, resource scheduling, energy efficiency, and security to support large model research and applications.

The laboratory connects theoretical advances with practical needs, bringing mathematical methods and artificial intelligence together across theory, algorithm design, and system implementation. It also supports advanced research training and the development of early-career researchers through interdisciplinary collaboration, academic exchange, and joint research. Through university–industry partnerships and an open approach to research collaboration, the laboratory seeks to expand domestic and international cooperation, share research resources, and translate research findings into practical applications. These efforts provide a foundation of knowledge, technology, and expertise to support the digital economy and industrial modernization in Guangdong and the wider region.
