The Engineering Technology Research Center for Supercomputing and Digital Innovation was approved for recognition as a Shantou Municipal Engineering Technology Research Center in 2024, with Professor Cai Hao serving as its director. The center focuses on supercomputing technology and digital innovation applications. Relying on the disciplinary resources of the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, it conducts research and industrial application in high-performance computing, big data processing, and digital innovation technologies.
The Engineering Technology Research Center for Supercomputing and Digital Innovation adopts an advanced artificial intelligence computing architecture to provide new infrastructure for computing power services, data services, and algorithm services required by applications such as artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and big data analytics. Through the production, aggregation, and scheduling of computing power, it efficiently supports open resource sharing and the aggregation of industrial innovation, powerfully promoting the industrialization of artificial intelligence, the intelligentization of industries, and the intelligentization of government governance, and building an ecosystem of "computing power + data + artificial intelligence." The center closely relies on the Shantou Municipal Government and Shantou University, serves Shantou's core industries, and broadly serves Shantou's digital economy and its "Three New, Two Special, One Major" industries. Targeting application needs in key fields such as genetic engineering, biopharmaceuticals, industrial design, urban management, finance, animation, new materials, new energy, and basic research, the center is based in Shantou, radiates across the province, and serves the nation, striving to build itself into a "world-class research center for supercomputing and digital innovation."
Based on Shantou's "Three New, Two Special, One Major" industrial development framework and centering on the main direction of "empowering product upgrading through technological innovation and driving production transformation through digitalization," the center focuses on the "Two Special" industries (toy creativity and textile and apparel), and gradually extends to the "Three New" and "One Major" industries. By integrating Shantou University's internal advantageous resources in education, research, and talent, as well as external advantageous resources from industries and enterprises, the center establishes stable cooperative relationships, promotes resource sharing and technological exchange between universities and enterprises, rapidly applies scientific and technological innovation achievements to specific industries and industrial chains, and further drives the high-quality development of Shantou's industries.
In accordance with local industrial development needs, the Engineering Technology Research Center for Supercomputing and Digital Innovation relies on the Shantou Blockchain Industry Association and the Shantou Computer Society, takes a market-oriented approach, and provides research and development services to the government, research institutes, and enterprises and institutions, promoting local industrial upgrading and development. The center relies on the Shantou Branch of the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou—co-established by Shantou University with Sun Yat-sen University, the Guangdong Laboratory of Chemistry and Fine Chemical Engineering, and Guangdong Zhongda Mingbo Technology Co., Ltd.—as well as the Next-Generation Information Technology and Digital Innovation Laboratory co-established by Shantou University with Shantou Telecom and Tianyi IoT, to jointly promote the comprehensive enhancement of Shantou's independent innovation capability and industrial competitiveness in the field of supercomputing and digital innovation.
