This year's South China regional competition attracted 534 teams from 75 universities across five provinces: Guangdong, Hunan, Fujian, Guangxi, and Hainan. The regional judging committee conducted preliminary online evaluations of the 366 successfully submitted entries, ultimately selecting 66 teams to advance to the regional finals.
Upon receiving the project brief, the college promptly assembled a team and assigned specific tasks within the team, including process design, equipment selection, and drafting technical drawings. Simultaneously, the team focused on the continuous optimization of a clean production scheme for dimethyl sulfoxide, striving to overcome key challenges such as energy consumption control optimization and compliance with environmental protection standards. After more than four months of intensive preparation, six teams from the college successfully submitted their projects. Among them, the team named "Sulfone & Garlic" —composed of five students: Sun Meiqi (team leader), Chen Yuexi, and Zhu Qianying, all from the Applied Chemistry program of the class of 2022; Yang Shaojie from the Environmental Engineering program of the class of 2022; and Mo Yuying from the Civil Engineering program of the class of 2022—advanced to the finals of the South China regional competition. During the defense session, the team clearly articulated their design rationale, innovative features, and feasibility, responded to the judges' questions with composure, and ultimately secured first prize in the regional competition and second prize at the national level through their outstanding performance.
This competition was led by three faculty members from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering—Liu Sujiao, Fang Yiwen, and Xie Shaoxiong. During the preparation phase, the faculty members provided comprehensive support throughout the entire process—from process scheme optimization and standardized drafting of technical drawings to the structuring of presentation logic—addressing students 'questions and resolving their concerns. The lead instructors noted that this competition has ignited students' enthusiasm, honed their professional skills and problem-solving capabilities, fostered innovative thinking and teamwork, enabled them to accumulate practical industry experience, and laid a solid foundation for their future career development.
Since its establishment, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has placed great emphasis on the educational value of high-level academic competitions, leveraging events such as the National Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Design Competition to comprehensively cultivate students 'practical skills, innovative thinking, and teamwork spirit. The solid theoretical knowledge and efficient resource integration capabilities demonstrated by the participating students are tangible outcomes of the school's dedicated efforts in talent cultivation and the enhancement of teaching quality, underscoring the remarkable achievements of its educational initiatives.
